Can you make a left turn on to a one way street at red light?

According to federal law: 42 U.S.C. 6322 (c)

Each proposed State energy conservation plan to be eligible for Federal assistance under this part shall include: . . . (5) a traffic law or regulation which, to the maximum extent practicable consistent with safety, permits the operator of a motor vehicle to turn such vehicle right at a red stop light after stopping, and to turn such vehicle left from a one-way street onto a one-way street at a red light after stopping."

So this is legal where permitted by state law, but any state that does not allow this cannot receive federal funding under this law. I have yet to learn of any state that does not allow this.

Go to page 93 in the Massachusetts Drivers Manual:

"Turns on Red After coming to a complete stop at a red traffic light, you are allowed to turn right on red after giving the right-of-way to pedestrians and other vehicles, unless a NO TURN ON RED sign is posted. You may turn left on red following the same rules only if you are turning from a oneway street onto another one-way street."

Hello, We have just been going threw the Ohio rule book they give you with your permit. In the state of Ohio you can make a LEFT on Red if it is from one way street on to another one way street. Other states might be different.Our daughter just got her license yesterday.

In the 2003 edition of AAA Digest of Motor Laws, only six states (and NYC) prohibited left turn on red. In some states you may even make a left turn on red from a two-way to a one-way, in others: only from a one-way to another one-way. Obviously these general rules can be overridden by a specific sign or signal. Some states have a general rule that you cannot proceed in the direction of any red arrow signal, so if the red signal is a left-turn "arrow", you have to wait.

In California, you can make a left turn on red if you are leaving a one way street and entering a one way street. If the lane is normally used (when the light is green) to turn right, you can do this on red. Again both streets have to be one way. Actually, you can turn left on red from the center lane (again one way street into a one way street) if there is a pavement marking (arrow) that would normally allow you to do this on a green signal. Make sure, however there is no signing that prohibits this.

You may turn left on red where you are in the far left lane of a one way street and turning onto another one way street in Georgia. You are required to go through the same procedures as you would for turning right on red. (Stop, look for pedestrians, and traffic before proceeding.)

To put it simply, you can make a left turn on red from a one-way street onto another if you are anywhere exceptConnecticut, Guam, Maine, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Washington, DC.

Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Michigan, Ohio and Washington allow left turns on red from a two-way street onto a one-way street; Washington counts freeway on-ramps as one-way streets.

(a) Vehicle operators facing a steady circular red signal alone shall stop at a clearly marked stop line, but if none, before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection control area and shall remain standing until an indication to proceed is shown. However, the vehicle operators facing a steady circular red signal may, after stopping proceed to make a right turn from a one-way or two-way street into a two-way street or into a one-way street carrying traffic in the direction of the right turn; or a left turn from a one-way or two-way street into a one-way street carrying traffic in the direction of the left turn; unless a sign posted by competent authority prohibits such movement. Vehicle operators planning to make such turns shall remain stopped to allow other vehicles lawfully within or approaching the intersection control area to complete their movements. Vehicle operators planning to make such turns shall also remain stopped for pedestrians who are lawfully within the intersection control area as required by RCW 46.61.235(1).

In some locations, a left turn can be made at a signal after stopping, even where either street (or both) has two-way traffic. This will be advised by a posted sign.

Local traffic regulations governing this may vary considerably from place to place. If this particular move is not posted as permissible by a sign, or controlled by a left arrow, and you are unsure, avoid making the turn.

Left turn against a red light can only be made from a one way street onto another one way street. Signal and stop for a red traffic light at the limit line or corner. You may turn left into a left-moving, one way street if there is no sign to prohibit the turn. Yield to pedestrians, bicyclists or other vehicles moving on their green light.
