When a person decides to become a serial killer, there is a chance he could be aprehended after his second kill. Most researchers define serial killers as having three to four victims, but also includes in his database of serial killers some individuals who "killed only two victims but were suspect in other slayings or in which evidence indicated their intent to kill others". The problem with using a definition based strictly on three victims omits the two-time signature killer who has obsessive qualities and would be expected to continue to kill.

Are there serial killers inspired by Ed Gein?

Probably not. Serial murder is about the killer and his needs, it's internal. While the individuals may have known of Gein's crimes, they were not responsible for creating other killers. But Gein has been used as inspiration for movies including Silence of the Lambs and Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Traits of Gein's went into the composite of these fictional killers.

Was there a serial killer called buffalo bill?

Buffalo Bill was very, very loosely based on the real-life serial killer Ed Gein. I say "very, very loosely" based because Buffalo Bill and Ed Gein have only ONE thing in common: they both sewed together suits out of their victims' skin. Other than that, the Buffalo Bill character bears no resemblance to Ed Gein whatsoever.

What is the killer's name from saw?

There is no "real" person from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a fictional story, and Leatherface (who was played by Gunnar Hansen in the original 1973 film) is a fictional character. The moviemakers got the idea for the Leatherface character from the serial killer Ed Gein. That doesn't mean the movie is based on a true story. Just because a writer gets an idea for a story from real life, doesn't mean the story is based on the truth.A book/movie that is "based on a true story" is one that strives to portray the truth as accurately as possible. No such attempt was made with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Absolutely everything about it is fiction, except for two, possibly three things: Ed Gein wore the skin of his victims, gutted them and hung them up in his house, and MAY have eaten some of their remains.See the Related Question below for more details.

Why are some people who have killed 2 people classed as serial killers?

The FBI has been debating changing the number of kills for serial murder from three to two. When considering serial murder or as it is sometimes called, 'stranger murder', not every killer fits the description perfectly. An example would be the Yosemite Killer, Cary Stayner. He first killed a mother, daughter and their family friend, and weeks later killed another woman. The first three victims were, for the most part, killed at the same time. Then Stayner had what is called the cooling-off period before killing his next victim. Not all crimes are black-and-white, there are shades of gray. So, although Stayner actually had four victims, it was in only two separate incidents. But Stayner is considered a serial killer. Had he not been caught he would have killed again.

Who was the first child that became a serial killer?

Henry Lee Lucas claims he first killed when he was 9 years old..he then went on to kill 127 people (proven, because he showed authority's where the bodies were) even though he claimed to have killed over 300, authorities couldn't prove it. He was sentenced to 6 Death Sentences, however he only had to have 1 (you can only be killed once) There are many earlier cases. Look up "Serial Killer Girls" on google and you will find cases dating back to the late 19th century.

How many people does a serial killer kill?

After 3 similar murders have occurred over a span of more than 30 days with apparent "breaks" or "cooling off" periods in between each murder. For example, after the 3rd body was found in the Green River in Washington in the 80s, it was officially classified as a serial crime. It's up to debate as to whether Ed Gein should truly be described as a serial killer. He only admitted to killing 2 women, and was convicted for these two. Law officials believe he may be responsible for other murders in the area. But it goes unproven. Ed Gein was a regular grave robber, not necessarily a murderer. But his increasingly violent behaviour would have eventually led him to further murders, had he not been so disorganised, which made it easy for investigators to track down their murderer.
