The Archduke was the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was murdered by a Bosnian man who was assisted by a group called the Black Hand. The Black Hand had a lot of members who were involved in the government and military of Serbia, Austria-Hungary's neighbor. Austria-Hungary gave Serbia a list of demands, and when Serbia would not comply with them all, Austria-Hungary declared war on them (despite Germany and Russia having negotiations to try to avoid war).

This set off the following chain of events:

  1. Russia, a country friendly with Serbia, mobilized its military to prepare for war with Austria-Hungary.
  2. Germany (Austria-Hungary's ally) declared war on Russia.
  3. Germany, knowing that France and Russia were allies, also declared war on France.
  4. Because the border between Germany and France had a lot of forts and armies, Germany invaded Belgium to go around all of this.
  5. The United Kingdom, an old ally of Belgium's, demanded that Germany leave Belgium. When Germany refused, the UK declared war on Germany.
  6. The Ottoman Empire, an old enemy of Russia's, was given some war ships by Germany, and then used these ships to attack Russia, thereby declaring war.
