That depends n their construction. The simplest of battery is carbon-zink. More modern batteries may use lithium-cell technology. The idea behind all batteries is to produce electrons, that will move from the minus pole to the positive (!). Rechargeables usually have a somewhat lower voltage, but has an inner chemical composition that allows them to reverse the current back into the battery. Just like lead-acid batteries /H2SO4/.
