Perhaps the best case could be made for the Vietnam era, when the media had just discovered their power, but not yet been incorporated into the power structure of the U.S.

They caught the government by surprise, and with their images of civil rights protesters being blatantly abused and the body bags coming home from Vietnam, changed us for the better.

Which is why you now no longer see civil rights protesters being blatantly abused and the body bags coming home from Afghanistan/Iraq.
