The 14th amendment gave almost all people living in America the rights of citizens. This in turn overruled the infamous Dred Scott v. Sandford case. But, in the years following reconstruction, the amendment lost its power due to a lack of white interest in the lives of black people. If the Amendment had maintained its power, the Black Civil Rights Movement would have been almost 100 years earlier following the Civil War.
