States' Rights is the theory that state and local government's actions and laws in dealing with social and economic problems are supreme to federal actions and laws. The theory goes back to the founding of our nation. Jefferson and Madison advocated states' rights in the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions. John C. Calhoun's Theory of Nullification, the South's justification for declaring independence from the US, also advocates states' rights. The argument of the States' Rights theory is that the Constitution is a compact between states, not between people. The states created the national government and gave it only limited power. States' Rights supporters believe that the state is closest to the citizen and can better reflect their wishes.

The controversy over federal power vs states' rights was one of the main causes of the Civil War. This war was also called the War Between the States.
Federalism caused controversy in U.S. history primarily due to the tension between state and federal authority. Debates over the balance of power often led to conflicts over issues such as slavery, civil rights, and economic regulation. States' rights advocates feared federal overreach, while proponents of a stronger central government argued for a unified national policy. This ongoing struggle has shaped American political discourse and contributed to significant historical events, including the Civil War and various civil rights movements.
Division of Powers- Basic principle of federalism and constitutional provisions by which governmental powers are divided on a geographic basis (in the U.S. between the National Government and the States).
I believe the case that resolved the diferences between "States Rights" and the National Government was called the American Civil War.
The federalist party was dead before the Civil War started, it died down in 1820, the civil war started in 1861.
