One of the most important issues is in the field of genomics. With the cost of full, human DNA sequencing steadily dropping, it is becoming easier and cheaper to obtain a person's entire genetic map. If it becomes legal and standard practice for employers and insurance companies to sequence their clients, then it will be very easy to violate their privacy without them knowing.

In fact, even by sampling someone's saliva from a cup that they used at an interview, a company will be able to obtain all of the information relative to a person's predisposition to a number of illnesses, psychological disorders, or other maladies that will make them less able to gain employment or become insured.

Therefore, employers would be able to gauge value of candidates through genomics by discovering which potential employees would be more likely to be:

- psychological "alphas" - for sales and highly competitive positions - via dopamine and norepinephrine receptor gene variants that have higher binding affinities);

- more meticulous with regard to numerical figures and details - for accounting positions - norepinephrine receptor gene variants with higher binding affinity and serotonin receptor gene variants with slightly lower binding affinity...resulting in mild OCD symptoms

- etc...

More importantly, insurance companies would be able to instantly screen for hundreds, or even thousands of potential diseases that an insurance applicant would be predisposed to (at that time, or any time in his/her life), and they would be able to deny them coverage based on those "pre-existing conditions"...because they were all congenital. This includes any cancers to which they are predisposes, autoimmune disorders, osteoporosis, Heart disease, and psychiatric/neurological diseases. Or, the company could even increase their rates based on this data.

This genetic information could be obtained very easily and without the client's/candidate's consent, based on the fact that disposed gum or drinking cups do not require consent or a warrant to obtain and use.

All of these measures violate a person's privacy.

Do you have two ethical issues about biotechnology?

Two ethical issues related to biotechnology are the potential for genetic discrimination based on genetic information, and the ethical implications of gene editing and manipulation, particularly in terms of altering the human germline. Each of these issues raises concerns about privacy, equality, and the long-term consequences of manipulating genetic information.

What impact does biotechnology have on individual society and environment?

Biotechnology can have a significant impact on society by improving healthcare through innovations like personalized medicine and genetic engineering. It can also lead to more sustainable agricultural practices by developing genetically modified crops that require fewer resources. However, biotechnology can also raise ethical concerns regarding genetic modification and privacy issues related to personalized medicine. Environmental impacts may include potential biodiversity loss if genetically modified organisms are not properly regulated.

What are the social issues concerning biotechnology?

Biotechnology raises several social issues, including ethical concerns about genetic modification and manipulation of life forms, which can lead to debates over food safety, environmental impact, and biodiversity loss. There are also issues related to access and equity, as advances in biotechnology may not be equally available to all populations, potentially exacerbating existing health disparities. Additionally, the implications of biotechnological advancements on privacy and consent, particularly in areas like genetic testing and data sharing, pose significant ethical dilemmas. These factors combine to create a complex landscape that requires careful consideration and regulation.

Do data brokers such as USA Data raise privacy issues?

Data brokers do create privacy issues as they often have limited means of authenticating the information they amass about the consumer. Most concerning is their acceptable use policies, which have more to do with protecting the value of their data asset and less about the consumer's privacy. For these companies (unlike the credit reporting agencies) are largely unregulated and as such their business practices make it easier for the criminal element to steal a victims financial identity, which anyone who has had their identity stolen can tell you is a total infringement upon ones privacy. Congress should take immediate action and bring some transparency to this unregulated practice of profiting from trafficking of our privacy. Sean J. Kent
