Polygamy in the United States is illegal, but according to the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) in the mortal life you must obey the "laws of the land" so once the U.S. made polygamy illegal the Church stopped practicing it. This ban on polygamy also extended to nations where polygamy is legal. Some members of the church that broke off because they thought Polygamy should still be practiced. These groups are in no way affiliated with the mainstream Church, and generally do not consider themselves to be 'Mormons'. Also, as members of these offshoot polygamous groups are not legally married (only 'spiritually' married) to more than one woman, they can very rarely be convicted of illegal bigamy. It is no different than Hugh Hefner and the Playboy bunnies - morally questionable, but not illegal.

The Church teaches that in the afterlife one man can be "sealed" to more than one woman. They do not specifically say why but it is rumored that it is because there will be more women that get into heaven then men (which sounds right) and to get into the the highest kingdom of heaven you must be married.
