inherent powers
they are not given to the federal government and not denied to the states
The tenth Amendment states that powers not expressly given to the federal government nor denied to the states are reserved for the people/states.
The reserved powers are powers not specifically delegated to the federal government nor specifically denied to the states which the states are free to exercise within their appropriate spheres of influence.
There are many powers not given to the Federal government in the Constitution. Specifically it states that any power not specifically granted to the government will be reserved for the States (interpreted as for the people).

Denied powers are those the Constitution prohibits the federal government from doing. For instance, interfering with the free expression of religion or the right of people to petition the government.
Powers shared between states and the federal government are Concurrent powers.
