Who enforces laws in Mexico?

There are many secretariats of state equivalent to American agencies such as EPA, FBI, CIA or DEA. These have the same functions, including the task of enforcing regulations defined by Mexican laws. Some examples are provided:

• Secretariat of Communications and Transportation
• Secretariat of Labor and Social Security
• Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources
• Secretariat of Energy

There is also the judiciary (Mexico is a federal republic with three powers, including the executive, legislative and judiciary) which includes the Supreme Court, the Federal Electoral Tribunal and Law Enforcement Agencies.

Mexico is a federal republic; as such, the local, state and federal congresses make the laws; these follow an approval and amendment process, and then are voted into law by the congresses. Then these are implemented by the municipal presidents (akin to a U.S.' county executive), state governors and the president of Mexico, depending on the scope of the law being approved.

Mexico is a Federal Representative Republic, officially named Estados Unidos Mexicanos (United Mexican States) which is based on a presidential system set up by the Mexican 1917 Constitution. The system of government establishes three levels of government:

• The Federal Union.
• The State Governments.
• The Municipal Governments.

The Federal Government is constituted by the Powers of the Union, which are the three branches of government: the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary. The Legislature is a bicameral Congress of the Union, composed by a Chamber of Deputies and a Senate. The Executive is basically the President of the United Mexican States, who is head of state, head of government and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Finally, the Judiciary is composed by the Supreme Court of Justice, the Electoral Tribunal and other tribunals and courts. Officials at the legislative and executive levels of government are elected by direct popular vote.
