The genocide in 1932-33 of at least 5 million Ukrainians was perpetrated by Stalin in order to pacify the least cooperative of the many ethnic groups within the Soviet empire. The incident is known as the "Black Harvest", as most of the deaths were caused by malnutrition. Something similar happened here in Kazakhstan, resulting in 1.5 million deaths, but was more attributable to the lack of organization in the system of collectivization than to actual malice for the slightly rebelious attitude of the Kazakhs, who had been mostly left alone under the Russian empire.

The key to Stalin's hatred of the Ukrainians is that it was in the Ukraine where the last royalists, many of them Cossacks, held out - helped by the U.S. - during the civil war. The genocide was also why many Ukrainians sided with the German invaders in World War II. Indeed, if the Germans had not been so anti-Slavic, they could have found an easy conquest in Ukraine, where the people had been more than happy to surrender to them. Unfortunately, the Nazis were right bastards just like Stalin's ilk, and so the Ukrainians found themselves once more in a catch 22, and suffered a bit more for it.

Now, they are caught between European and Russian interests. Envy the Ukrainians not, for their heyday ended with Rurik and the expansion from the Kievan empire to that of Kievan-Rus.
