The first ten Amendments are known as the Bill of Rights. Nine guarantee important rights to the people of the United States, and one guarantees rights to the states.

The Constitution created a strong system of central government for the several different states and cleaned up some old issues that could not be handled by the previous form of government under the Articles of Confederation. It originally said nothing about individual rights, which caused widespread concern, to the point where the Constitution might not have been ratified by the necessary 9 of the 13 states if it had not been promised that a Bill of Rights would be added as soon as possible after the new government became effective.

Among the crucial rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights are freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of association, freedom of the press, and protection against unreasonable searches and seizures.
