They felt strongly about a too powerful state church. They saw what it did in England and Europe and wanted to make sure that people had the right to choose. There are people today who think there should be a state religion in the United States and there are often references to the US as a "Christian nation". This is very dangerous since this country is comprised of many different people from many different places. This is one of the strongest points of the United States that we offer a place for all. When there is a state religion the freedom to worship is taken from people who do not think the same way as those in power.
