Because media does not always base stories entirely on fact, can be very opinionated one way or the other, and some media articles are basically Propaganda. If jurors were to read or view the opinions of others, or stories that are high in emotion but not necessarily factually correct, it could sway how a juror feels toward the case before even considering evidence given in the court room. This would not allow for a fair and objective decision to be made about the innocence or guilt of the person on trial.

Jurors are not to pay attention to any type of media during the trial in order to prevent bias, ensure a fair trial, and uphold the principle of not being influenced by external sources. It is important for jurors to base their decision solely on the evidence presented in court.

What are the methods used to deal with the media influence on a criminal trial?

There are a number of options available to the court. Initially, both the prosecution and the defense is given the opportunity to voir dire potential jurors, in an effort to keep people that have heard media coverage about the case from being on the jury. If it is a locally publicized case, the case may be transferred to a different location, where jurors will be less likely to have heard media info. Next, if there is ongoing media coverage, both sides can ask the court to sequester the jury, or keep them in a closed location and unable to be exposed to media. Sometimes the media is prevented or limited from being in the courtroom during trial. Often cameras are prohibited from courtrooms.
