Students need to be able to write the words they pronounce and spell the words they write and there are no hard and fast rules. Spelling lists need to be prepared for the things they are being taught. If we are dealing with Farms for example, a picture of a cow, the name next to the picture and the sound the cow makes next to that. The student should copy the words. Everyday words should be used in a conversational form. Where are we - in a car, how do you spell car, write the word Where are we going - to the shop, spell shop, write the word.

Applying words in authentic situations gains results. Provide some strategy to help spelling. Do not bother with tests, students spend to much time trying to remember words and thus do not learn any new ones. Use spelling patterns, such as in and out, dog and cat, sky and sun, ship and boat and sea. Be concerned with the age of the student, young people have a low threshold of attention, so teach little and often.

Make spelling a 'fun game' with rewards for results and smiles for failures. The teachers imagination is the key to success
