The company name Google was indeed supposed to be googol, but as the founders admit on their website, their spelling wasn't too hot when they came to fill in the company registration form.

A1. A mathematician asked either his son or his nephew (don't recall which) to come up with a word that would mean ten to the power of 100. The lad came up with the word "Google".
