The name is from Carpathia (Hungarian: Karpatalja) - currently part of Western Ukraine. Until 1920, the region was part of Northern Hungary. From 1920 to 1940, Carpathia was part of Czechoslovakia, then Hungary, then USSR and now it is Ukraine. The original Magyar (Hungarian) spelling of the name was Csernicska - sometimes Csernyicska, Csernicsko. The name is of Slavic origin, probably Ruthenian.

The Cernicica spelling was created in Romania, after 1947.
