Greek does not belong to any branch of the Indo-European family of languages. It is a branch unto itself, that has no become many languages. Rather, Greek has replaced itself as it evolved (koine Greek to modern Greek) Greek is believed to have been influenced by the Semitic Language family (Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic), a far older family of languages, but it still counts as one of the more far off Indo-European languages, along with Persian, Kurdish and Armenian. HELLENIC!! 8/ Gosh! Both of you are wrong!! XD

Romance languages have their roots in Latin - and in Greek before that. Both Latin and Greek root words derive originally from Sanskrit - originating in the Indus Valley civilization. Thus, we now speak in terms of an Indo-European set of languages.

there is much speculation exactly where it came from but historians are pretty certain that the greek alphabet was adopted from the pheonicians which is now pretty much modern day Lebanon. i believe all languages slowly evolve from others but greek could have very well been developed where modern day Greece is now... it certainly is the oldest language in Europe and if you go back a few dialects quite possibly the oldest language in the world. all the indo-european languages structurally came from greek including all the romance languages like italian and spanish even though greek is not considered a romance language, they know that those languages came from greek and if you listen you'll hear the similarities.
