There are five different Nobel Prize categories: Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace and 'Physiology or Medicine.'

The first year that Alfred Nobel's charitable foundation started awarding Nobel Prizes was in 1901.

The first English writer to win the prize for Literature was Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), in 1907. Although born in India, Kipling was British and English.

However, English scientist John William Strutt (Lord Rayleigh), physicist and writer of scientific papers, and who made significant contributions to our understanding of numerous aspects of physics, won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1904, the same year that another writer of scientific papers, Englishman William Ramsay won his Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

But before that, Ronald Ross, a Doctor Who was born in British India to English parents, and who was educated and raised in England, won a Nobel Prize in 1902. It was the Nobel Prize for 'Physiology or Medicine.' Ross was foremost in helping to identify the causes of malaria, and he too, in pursuance of his research and as evidenced by his autobiography, was a writer.

CONCLUSION

Although a number of English people have won Nobel Prizes, and doubtless many of them were/are 'writers' in the sense that they have published written works, it is also true that most of them were not especially renowned for their 'literature' as such.

So, if we wish to limit our list to English winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature, then the very first was Rudyard Kipling, in 1907.
