This lantern wasn't so much "invented" as produced.

It uses well established technology.

It was manufactured by American Gas Machine in the mid 1950s, the "A" models right around 1955. AGM was a division of Queen Stove Inc. and was either phased out or out of business by 1968. The Kamplite name was used from around 1949 to 1960 when the line was replaced with the Thermos line of lanterns (1960-1971).

This lantern continued to be manufactured for Sears Canada until around 1961 or 1962 for the JC Higgins line, although production had moved to Hong Kong.

They can be good performers with a good generator but this part is difficult to source these days (2012). However, the fuel mixture can be regulated with careful adjustment of the cleaning lever. They also require a longer than standard mantle, such as the Coleman #99 or Peerless 24-A.
