Read below for the former answer. I've seen this all over the internet. It is incorrect. The following site, http://wildlife.Utah.gov/rules/R657-03.php, specifically states that sugar gliders are NOT governed. You can also click on this site and download a rather large PDF file from the Utah Division of Wildlife. Page 9, section R657-3-17, it states that animals classified as "noncontrolled" require no certification/registration. Go to page 18, and you'll see that sugar gliders are classified as noncontrolled. They are LEGAL to have as pets, and don't require anything (state wise) to legally own them.

Former answer to question:

well, this is what I have been trying to find out myself, I have seen websites that proclaim that sugar gliders are completely illegal, while others say that you can certainly own a sugar glider. but the majority of websites and the most updated\credible websites say that you must have an certificate of registration- here are the steps: before an individual can apply for a certificate, they must obtain a letter from they're local animal shelter allowing possession of a sugar glider in the locality in which they live. Utah state county does not allow possession of sugar gliders or any animal that is not native to north america. requests for sugar gliders are approved with the following requirements:

holding facility will not be less than 18 inches by 24 inches.

holding facility must be higher than long.

holding facility must be inspected before sugar gliders are a acquired.

holding facility will be inspected yearly and be available to spot inspections when deemed necessary.

no breeding of the animal is to take place. (possession of both male and female not allowed)

no animals are to be resold or re-homed for any reason.

failure to comply with these laws will be ground for forfeiture of the registration certificate. the cost of the certificate is: $5.00 handling fee, and $50.00 certificate fee for the first year. it may be renewed after that for $25.00 each new year, how does an 11 year old know this? I HAD been looking into getting one until I came across this complicated and costly law, so now I am looking into a ferret :)
