Groundhogs and skunks are in different families. Groundhogs are in the Marmota genus, the Sciuridae family, and the Rodentia order. Skunks are in the family Mephitidae, the superfamily Musteloidea, the suborder Caniformia, and the order Carnivora. Although groundhogs and skunks are both mammals, they are only distantly related : )
Groundhog families do not typically stay together for long periods. After mating, female groundhogs give birth to a litter of young, which stay with their mother for about 6-8 weeks until they are weaned. Once the young groundhogs are mature enough, they leave to establish their own territories, leading a mostly solitary life as adults.
