There are many debates over the Brumbies of Australia and their impact, their hooves compact soil which leaves no air spaces where water can soak into the soil, which causes drought like conditions after some time. They also eat the grass and foliage which can cause soil erosion and 'dust bowl' type problems. There is also the problem of over population in some areas which can lead to health problems for the horses and not enough space for native species.
There are horses in Australia. Australia has a thriving horse racing and equestrian community. I live in Perth, Western Australia myself and there are around 15 horses stabled in a property just a couple of miles down the road from me.

Most horses are simply known as horses. Wild horses are known as brumbies.
No one specifically put them there. When people move to Australia they brought horses with them. Over the years some have escaped and bred. These are the horses that are called wild or feral.
