Well actually, they don't! Whales, dolphins and porpoises are all mammals just like us. So they have got some hairs (on their beaks or rostrums), are born alive, drink milk from their moms and breathe air. Whales are able to hold their breath so long because of adaptations in its body. Whale and dolphin meat is really dark red in colour, sometimes even black. This is due to a very high concentration of oxygen storing cells - not only in its blood but also mainly in its muscles. You see, when a whale dives really deep, the pressure squeezes its lungs tight, so keeping air in the lungs is not a very good option. Instead, part of the oxygen is stored in the muscles. Also, a reduced heartbeat preserves more blood and thus oxygen, and with that comes the fact that whales just have a lot of blood.
