elk are a mammal in northern America that have light colored tan fur with a dark brown to black "beard" depending on the species. the "beard" runs from the front of the front shoulder and ends under the back of the lower jaw. the face is the same dark color. all male elk bare antlers during the any weapon hunting season, the same time they mate, but lose them shortly afterward the next year around the beginning of march. when they regrow there is generally another point on each side, but not always. a different species of elk has different sized antlers. the species are: Rocky Mountain elk, ranging from Canada to southern Utah and in to parts of Arizona and New Mexico. Roosevelt elk, ranging along the west coast, and are generally smaller than all other species. Tule elk, ranging in all tropical marshes of the world and having the smaller of the antlers. the female elk do not sport antlers, but have the same color
