This all depends on your location, market demands for your area, and whether other neighbors are indeed making more money raising hogs than cattle or vice versa. In some areas, cattle bring more money to the farm or ranch than hogs will. On other areas it's the exact opposite. This all depends on the input costs that you have to pay in order to raise these animals. On most hog farms, the expenses for raising and feeding hogs, not to mention depreciation costs on buildings and equipment, is much higher than it is for raising beef cattle that are raised on pasture for most if their lives, with the only inputs being Fencing, labour and fuel costs in making hay, etc. The hog market is also very volatile: one year the markets could be favourable for making money, and the next it's a bust year and you're better off getting out of the hog business than staying in it.
