There are about 63 types of kangaroo in Australia. They include wallabies, euros (wallaroos), pademelon, bettongs, quokkas, potoroos and rat-kangaroos.

The three main species that are "commonly" called kangaroo are:

• The Red Kangaroo (Macropus rufus) - This is the largest marsupial in the world and the most common in Australia.
• The Eastern Grey Kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) - This species ranges over the fertile eastern part of the continent.
• The Western Grey Kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) - This species is found in the southern part of west Australia, near the coast of South Australia and the Darling River basin.

Many species of kangaroos occupy the eastern half of Australia, and this is the area most heavily populated by kangaroos.The Eastern Grey kangaroo is a species which is common, but not the most common.
