my best guess is it serves a purpose that it creates a protective boundary around the teeth from extreme force like a punch in the face or falling down. it of course connects the cheeks to the maxillary and mandibular jaw and i personally believe that is a good place to store things like sunflower seeds, candy, cough drops, and anything else you like to suck on or store in while you are chewing on something else. there is no primary function for it that is officially stated as far as my research has proven to me
