The hippopotamus is the third largest land mammal, after the elephant and the white rhinoceros. They can weigh between 1.5 and 3.5 tons. They have short legs, a big barrel shaped body, and an enormous mouth.


They eat mostly plants and spend most of the day in a lake or river, coming out in the cool of the evening to graze on the grass.


Hippos are dangerous, ferocious creatures. They can run faster than a human and have been known to attack people, especially those who take a swim in the hippo's lake or river.


There are two species of hippo, the common hippo and the pygmy hippo. They live in Africa and Asia.


Crocodiles, lions and hyenas go after young hippos if they stray away from the adults. Man is the main enemy of adult hippos.
