Alpacas, like their close relatives the llamas and their more distant relatives the camels, do not need to drink a lot of water because they are very efficient at retaining and recycling water. They resorb a great deal of water from their intestines, to the point their feces are quite dry, and concentrate their urine significantly.
With such low water loss, alpacas don't need to drink much water.
