Why do the Japanese kill whale?

Japan has a long history of whaling and use it for scientific research, cuisine and other things. Although commercial whaling is temporarily illegal, only the Institute of Cetacean Research is allowed to. Japan isn't the only country that allows for whale hunting. Many countries allow natives to hunt whales as it may be a great part of their culture, such as the Inuits in northern Canada, the island of Bequia, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and the Lamalera and Lamakera of Indonesia. Even the U.S allow the Alaskan and Washington natives to hunt for whales. The only thing is that msot of these communities have a limit and must not surpass this limit.
