Cesar Milan's methods are controversial and his knowledge about dog behaviour is questionable, based on faulty premises. He's a celebrity that brings in enough money so his shows go on, even though they are edited and produced to make it look like his methods are a great success, appeal to people looking for quick solutions to their dog's problems or to the power hungry who want to control their dogs in unhealthy ways.

Though sometimes he does have better insight in his shows and evey now and then he goes with positive reinforcement and figuring out actual possible reasons for bad behaviour without chalking it all up to dogs wanting to be dominant.

How do you leash train a German sheperd pit bull mix?

You start by making the leash a positive thing. Everytime your dog comes up to you have the leash in hand and pet him with it in your hand while feeding him treats. After calm submission is accomplished put it on and approached the door. You must be holding the leash in a way that doesnt project tension, such and a large circle like you would ravel a hose NOT by rapping it around your hand a million times. Hold the leash like this through the whole walk!! DO NOT leave out the door until your dog is completely calm and ready to move forward. When calm you open the door and walk out first in front of your dog, do not allow him toallow him to follow until he is AGAIN calm, by walking out first you are tellin him that you are the leader and you are asking him to follow. Once outside you just start walking, do not project angry or frustrated energy, put your shoulder back and your head high and arms at your side as if carrying a breif case, look confident, because if your not your dog will sense it and will take control of your weak energy, dogs only follow calm assertive leaders, not frustrated, angry or fearful energy. DO NOT allow the dog in front of you, do not allow him to sniff when he wants, do not allow him the time to stop and stiff and use the bathroom until he has walked the way your asking and has done so for a good 30 minutes, and do not allow his attention to go anywhere but on the walk. The reason for this is because if you think of a pack of wild dogs the pack leaves when the pack leader says, they follow no questions asked and NO DOG walks in front of him he wont allow it, but he doesnt do this by saying "PLEASE STOP!!! BUDDY STOP IT DONT DO THAT" he simply nips the other dog in the neck or stomach(where our sides of the stomach would be) no words are spoken. but we dont really have the type of body to do that. So simply take the leash and snap it to the side to snap him out of the consentration. DONT snap backwards, only to the side, or you will only intensify the unwanted behavior. If he is one of those that just wont walk, because he has the instinct to herd from being a shepard, you can also poke with two fingers, to simulate the bite of a dog, in the back of his legs like he would a sheep or cattle. DONT GIVE UP. pull him with the leash and if he as much as moves an inch on his own, release the tension. You actually give him a kind of jerk not a complete pull until he starts to move forward on him own, He is then getting the message that you are asking him to walk and not be afraid of the leash, basically to follow your lead. The walk is the best way to earn trust and everytime you do this without giving up you will gain more trust with your dog. I highly suggest you watch or read Cesar Millans books and or watch his show called the Dog Whisperer on the national geographic channel. He has inspired me to become a Dog behavior specialist. I really hopes this helps!!!!!

How do you stop a dog being aggressive to other dogs?

There is alot. So i will try to sum it up. First you have to project calm and assertive energy at all times. NEVER be frustrated or fearful or angry or over excited. Dogs only follow a calm assertive pack leader. Next you must walk your dog for at least forty five minutes a day and walk her correctly, this way she releases mental energy, running around in the backyard doesnt do anything but take them from a cage to a bigger cage and causes more built up frustrated energy. What i mean by walking correctly is, first make the leash a non-excitment positive thing, by letting the dog come to you when its in your hand and not getting overexcited. after its on hold the leash at your side like a brief case, and have it ravelled up like a hose loosely. when you go for your walk you never leave out of the door until the dog in a calm submissive state, then YOU walk out the door first, wait for the dog to be calm then invite him to the outside. by doing this you have walked into the territory first that you are going to control. when walking, again, stay calm and project calm energy, keeping your hands at you side and head looking up with good intensions. If your dog even looks anywhere but forward you snap the leash to the SIDE to snap him out of it. If he is lunging you push his butt down and turn him around and stop in the place he got aggressive in until he is calm without looking back once, if he looks back snap the leash to the side again, his brain then learns to be calm around that person, dog, or thing that he was once being aggresive towards. if you snap backwards you only intensify the unwanted behavior. it becomes a game of pulling. During the walk do not allow that dog to sniff when and where he wants, if you have ever seen a dog in a walking mode that no matter what you do they are focused and just striding along side the owner? Those dogs are releasing frusted energy mentally, once you dog is in the mode for about 30 minutes then you can allow time to sniff and use the bathroom. only for about 5-8 minutes, then just start walking, no asking verbally, just walk. When you return home don't go in until he is once again calm and you walk in first and then ask him to follow. Second, when he starts to get aggressive you take your two index and pointer fingers and poke firmly at his neck or his side of his stomach below the spine. this simulates the bite of another dog. and it again snaps him out of the unwanted behavior. RIGHT AFTER you poke him if your not standing, stand up and walk in front of him confident as you can be, never fearful, he can sense it, and put your finger up and say "hey" not loud or like you dad used to do, just calm and assertively. until he surrenders and walks away or rolls over or goes back to calm submissive state don't back down. I cant stress how important it is for you not to back down. If you do back down before he submits he wins and you make him more aggressive. I hope i helped i highly suggest you watch or buy Cesar millans dog whisperer on the national geographic channel he is very good and is the reason why i am going to school to become a dog behaviorist. you can also buy his season dvds;)
