A "bit" as a unit of money was 1/8 of an old Spanish reale coin.
Smaller-denomination coins weren't readily available so change was often made by cutting reales into slices, much like a Pizza. The smallest slice was 1/8 of a reale which became known in English as a bit.
Even though reales were Spanish, they were commonly used in colonial America along with British Coins. When the US established the dollar as its currency the new coins' values were linked to the reale. The dollar was supposed to be a purely decimal currency based on multiples of 10, but an exception was made for compatibility with quarter-reale slices. That's why US Coins include a quarter (25¢) rather than the 20¢ pieces found in most decimal systems, and it also explains why a quarter is still sometimes referred to as "2 bits"; i.e. 2/8 of a dollar!
eight bits are in a dollar
The term "two bits" for a quarter originates from the Spanish dollar, or "pieces of eight," which was widely used in colonial America. The dollar was subdivided into eight "bits," so a quarter of a dollar was referred to as "two bits." This colloquialism persisted even after the U.S. established its own currency system, and it remains a part of American vernacular today.
8 bits make up 1 byte
The reason the US quarter dollar (25 cents) is called "two bits" originates from the circa. 1598 practice of dividing a Spanish dollar (the Real de a Ocho) into eight wedge-shaped segments. The coin was worth eight Spanish reales, thus each wedge was worth 1 reale or "a piece of eight". Two such pieces (or "two bits") became a common nickname for a quarter dollar.

Byte!
8 bits grouped together is called a byte. A byte is a unit of digital information in computing and telecommunications that typically consists of eight bits. Bytes are often used to represent a character such as a letter, number, or symbol in a computer's memory. The size of a byte can vary depending on the computer architecture, but it is typically 8 bits on most modern systems.
one byte comprised of eight bits
A bit size is one. It can be either a 0 or 1. Eight bits together is called a byte. Four bits (half of a byte) is called a nibble.
A group of eight bits is called a byte. It is the fundamental unit of data in computing and can represent up to 256 different values. Bytes are commonly used to store and transmit data in computer systems.
One byte equals eight bits.
