Few of the people who wrote the Bible are actually known by name. Much of the Old Testament was written anonymously, although various books may be attributed to Moses or King David and so on. We know that Paul certainly wrote seven of the epistles attributed to him, but the remaining Pauline epistles are believed to have been written in his name long after he died. Paul's educational background is discussed in As It Is Written: Studying Paul's Use of Scripture, where the conclusion is that he was a moderately well educated person. The epistles attributed to James, John, Jude and Peter are all believed to be pseudepigraphical.

This leaves the four New Testament gospels, but even these were originally anonymous and were only attributed, speculatively, to the persons whose names they now bear, later in the second century. Nevertheless, we can say that the author of Luke's Gospel, and Acts of the Apostles, was a well educated man with a good knowledge of Greek literature. The author of Mark's Gospel stands head and shoulders above Paul and the author of Luke's Gospel, as an author of outstanding education and literary genius. He has been called possibly the greatest writer of the first century. And we do not even know his name!

Mark (the name we continue to use for this anonymous author) was also well educated in Greek literature. He is considered to be the greatest exponent in all antiquity of a literary form known as intercalation, and John Dominic Crossan (The Birth of Christianity) goes as far as to call Mark's special form of intercalation, 'Markan intercalation'. His use of parallel and chiastic structures in the Gospel is the mark of a real genius. For example, the entire Gospel is based around a framework structure of immense scope, using the parallel format to create emphasis or develop themes that would otherwise not be apparent:

A . John explains the coming of Jesus (Mark 1:1-8)

B .The baptism of Jesus (1:9)

The question arises whether Shakespeare is more famous than Homer Simpson or Sonic the Hedgehog or Spongebob Squarepants or some other person. It depends what group of people you are talking about. Among Americans who are poorly educated and watch a lot of TV, Homer Simpson is probably more famous than Shakespeare. Among some video gamers, maybe Sonic is more famous than Shakespeare. Among the billions of people who are not inundated with American culture, Shakespeare is probably the better known person.
