No an ultrasound does not hurt the baby, or the mother for that matter, at any stage. The frequency used during ultrasound is not audible to the human ear and thus does not cause any damage or discomfort to either baby or mother.

The answer depends on whom you're asking. Some doctors will say it's completely harmeless, others will stress that too little is known about it's effects on the baby to have conclusive answers, so they should be used only for medical reasons (follow-up of the baby) and not for fun. Some studies have found the sound waves to cause fetal cells to die (in vitro - which means not in a natural setting but in a lab), but I'm sure there are plenty of other studies stating it has no negative effect on the course of the pregnancy. As always in science, conclusive answers are hard to get. Just to be sure (as with any medical intervention): limit the use of ultrasounds to what your doctor advises, and avoid any unnecessary exposure: rather be safe than sorry.
