what is the difference between hcpcs and cpt codes
HCPCS and CPT codes are two different code sets for medical billing. Both can be used to submit claims. These code sets are maintained by two different entities. CPT codes are copyrighted and maintained by the American Medical Association. HCPCS codes are mainted by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Which code set you used should be based upon choosing the code which most accurately describing the service that is performed. Whether that should be a CPT code or a HCPCS code should be determined by the provider.
Another factor to consider is where the claim will be submitted. It is always a good idea to check coverage from the insurance carrier / payer before submitting a claim. Tell them which procedure code and diagnosis code you intend to use.
There are many different code books, code software and internet code lookup tools available to help assist in choosing the correct code. www.instacode.com has both books available.
A full listing of diagnostic codes can be obtained from most General Motors dealerships. The Chevy Lumina has more than 500 diagnostic codes.
The average Nissan automobile has more than 400 diagnostic troubleshooting codes. You can obtain a complete list of diagnostic codes from most Nissan dealerships.
Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
The 1988 Mazda B2200 pickup does not use OBD-II codes, as this standardized system was introduced in 1996. Instead, it likely employs an earlier diagnostic system, often referred to as OBD-I, which may not provide the same level of diagnostic information. To retrieve any trouble codes, you would typically need to use a specific diagnostic tool or follow a manufacturer-specific procedure.
No difference in the engines, just in the ECU (Engine Control Unit) programming. OBD2 doesn't let you have the diagnostic codes without a code reader.
CPT codes are used to describe medical, surgical, and diagnostic services and are used among physicians, coders, patients, and financial departments. HCPCS codes are the same exact thing but a much more broad range of uses include non-physician services, prosthetic devices, and medical contractors.

To retrieve diagnostic codes from a 2000 Cadillac STS, you can use an OBD-II scanner. First, connect the scanner to the OBD-II port located under the dashboard near the driver's seat. Turn the ignition to the "On" position without starting the engine, then follow the scanner's prompts to read the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Alternatively, you can perform the "key-on, engine-off" procedure by turning the ignition on and off three times quickly, which may display codes on the dash, though using a scanner is more reliable.
The primary difference is extent.
