Relationships with other countries is now a little less complicated in that world trade, tourism, and other forms of international relationships NO LONGER involve two countries, which would entail two forms of laws & customs. There is no longer a North and South Vietnam. Only a one Vietnam to communicate with, albeit a communist one.

They were an ally to the NVA (North Viet Army). The VCs mission was to defeat the US supported South Viet government (Republic of South Vietnam/RVN). The VC had no jets, tanks, nor heavy artillery; they relied upon manpower, small arms, and guerrilla warfare. Their ally, the NVA, had the tanks, jets, and heavy artillery. The VC gradually lost ground during the war, and were slowly decimated by US/allied firepower over the years; culminating with the communist offensive (Tet) of 1968. After '68, the NVA shouldered most of the fighting.
In other parts of Southeast Asia there was communist related violence: Maylasia, Indo-China (Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam).
Eisenhower famously articulated the "domino theory," suggesting that if communism succeeded in South Vietnam, other countries in Southeast Asia would likely fall to communism one after another, similar to a line of falling dominoes. He believed that this would pose a significant threat to the stability and security of the region and ultimately to the United States and its allies. This viewpoint was a key justification for U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.

Sadly, it was, but to a very limited extent. When the US pulled out of South Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos fell to the communists, but it did not spread much further. Thailand, Malaysia, and other other Southeast Asia nations did not. So in that sense, the entire region did not fall, only the countries in the immediate vicinity of South Vietnam.
