McClellan was married to the lovely Ellen Marcy, daughter of Colonel Randolph Marcy. His letters to his wife reveal much of his true personality - his overinflated ego, his vast sense of self-importance, his contempt for Lincoln.

Ellen Marcy was previously courted by Ambrose Powell Hill of Virginia, who became a Confederate Lieutenant General, and one of the three corps commanders in Lee's Army. A recent biographer has suggested that A. P. Hill caught venereal disease while still a cadet at West Point, on his trip back to the Military Academy after his furlough following his second year there. Venereal diseases were then incurable. The biographer also suggested that Colonel Marcy was aware of this lapse on Hill's part and of his diseased condition, and put pressure on his Nellie to break things off with Hill.

McClellan and his son were both governors of New Jersey following the war.
