In all wars they did (right back to the Civil War in the U.S., considered one of the bloodiest wars with the most loses per population at the time.) There are heavy casualties in every war and many suffer terrible wounds and trauma and most are civilians. Even when the troops come home from war they seldom get over the trauma of what they've seen and had to do.
