He was well known as a racecar driver before the war. He went to France as a driver but transferred to the aviation division.He learned to fly on his own time and eventually joined the U.S Army Ari Service.

Rickenbacker shot down 26 enemy aircraft in World War I. How many of the pilots were killed is not known, nor is the number of ground troops he might have killed.
