Are there any SS men alive today?
In my neighbourhood there lives a 87 year old SS-man from the SS-Panzerdivision Wiking. He is physically as fit as me - and I am only 48. I still see him riding his mountain-bike sometimes.

In December 1917 the 18th Amendment banned production, sale and consumption of alcholic beverages. Bernard Baroch was in charge of taking care of the needless waste in production. He standardized products, established priorities for shipment of important goods, set prices to encourage factories to turn out goods quickly. Altering bike designs saved the War Industries Bond 2,000 tons of steel for war goods. Practical hysteria towards Germans and traces of German influence were repressed in American society. Sauerkraut was changed to 'Liberty cabbage' and hamburgers were renamed 'Salisbury Steak'. The speaking of German language in public was banned in half the States by 1918. German literary works disappeared from libraries, streets were renamed and the careers of German musicians suffered. When some Germans refused to by war bonds they met violence. There were more jobs for women and African Americans. 1 million women proceeded to enter the workforce and the Women's Bureau was set up. There was a great migration of African Americans from South to North. As Immigration had been cut off there were more job opportunities for all.
How did evacuation effect children?
Not all children enjoyed the experience of evacuation. This is mainly due to two factors, either the foster parents they were assigned, or the idea of homesickness. Many children were seen as a burden to their fosters, and alot of evacuees were not educated to many everyday things. For example, more often and not, children were not accostomed to using a knife and fork. Then there was homesickness. Children were taken away for months, even years, and so of course they were to miss their family. Many children became depressed and miserable. However, there were those lucky children that were assigned kind and caring foster parents, and made many new friends in the village that they were to live. Children learned many new skills such as reading, writing and how to ride a bike. The country life suited many children perfectly, and there are accounts of children tantalising cows or sheeps and runnning away as fast as possible as these farm animals chased them. So the conclusion of the matter is that some disliked the whole evacuation process, others loved it. It all depended on who you were, who you were assigned to, and how you took to your new environment.

Civilians walked more then than now, a pedal bike was the commonest form of transoprt as most families had one, public transort in the form of buses were heavily used but did suffer from shortage of replacement vehicles and restricted fuel supply. The forces used motor cycles,and lorries and vans supplied by wartime makers and American makers, also a large number of civilian buses were taken by the War dept together with cars etc.
