The French Indo-China War (1946-1954) had been fought by Viet Minch forces supported by the communists, and the French supported by the free world (US). As part of an agreement to end the war, the communists would have Vietnam north of the 17th parallel, and the free world would have the southern portion of Vietnam south of the 17th parallel.
In 1956, it divided Vietnam at the 17th parallel into North and South Vietnam. They remained that way until the South Vietnam government surrendered to North Vietnam forces in April, 1975.
Vietnam was split into 2 separate countries north and south then the north attacked the south and after many years of guerrilla warfare the north won then communism spread through out the country and reunification of the country.
The south
When the Vietnam War ended in 1975, North and South Vietnam became one communist nation called Vietnam.
Communist NORTH Vietnam wanted to re-unite with it's SOUTHERN half; SOUTH Vietnam. The US backed South Vietnam desired to remain a non-communist Republic of South Vietnam. Because the "Communists" were involved, and this was the cold war era; the US had to stop & contain communism. The North attacked the South, the South resisted...Vietnam War.
North Vietnam is bordered to the west by Laos and China, while South Vietnam does not exist as a separate country currently. But historically, it was bordered to the west by Cambodia and Laos.

You can use the term "Vietnamese" now because there is such a thing. But technically you couldn't during the war because there were two categories of Vietnamese; Southern ones and Northern ones. They were separate countries like todays South Carolina, South Dakota, and West Virginia are separate states in the United States of America. Those are separate states from NORTH Carolina, NORTH Dakota, and the state of VIRGINIA. The Vietnam War would be like North Carolina or North Dakota fighting South Carolina and South Dakota. North Vietnam was the enemy in the Viet War. South Vietnam was the ally of the US.
There IS no North and South Vietnam, only Vietnam. After the US withdrew combat forces from South Vietnam, North Vietnam violated the peace agreement, invaded and conquered South Vietnam. Game over.
the north won and the south loss
North Vietnam WAS located north of the 17th parallel. South VN was south of it.
The North were the communists. The South was the free republic (of South Vietnam).
There no longer is a North Vietnam, North Vietnam and South Vietnam were joined together after the Vietnam War.
North Vietnam launched an invasion of South Vietnam.North Vietnam launched an invasion of South Vietnam.
Vietnam was split into 2 separate countries north and south then the north attacked the south and after many years of guerrilla warfare the north won then communism spread through out the country and reunification of the country.
North Vietnam defeated the South (or the North conquered the South).
Vietnam wasn't fighting anybody in 1964 because there was no country named Vietnam. There were two nations, one called North Vietnam and another called South Vietnam. Just like the states North Carolina and South Carolina or North Dakota and South Dakota in America...FOUR separate states! In 1964 North Vietnam became engaged in war with America; after the Tonkin Gulf naval battle(s) in August 1964.
