WW2 in Europe eliminated Germany, Britain, France, Austria, and Italy (Spain was neutral) as world powers. The Soviet Union (Russia) was big and fully mobilized, they simply just stepped in and established themselves.
During World War I, Russia was one of the major contendors. However, toward the end of the war a civil war ensued and Russia opted out of WWI. Wartime DRASTICALLY changed Russia. Not only did millions and millions die as a direct AND indirect result, but Russia's government changed hands as well (the late Soviet Union). During World War II, Russia again played a key role. Only this time, there was no civil war to pull them out. Instead, Germany signed a non-aggression pact with Russia and the two promised not wage war on one another. Hitler naturally broke this promise and invaded Russia. At the end of Europe's theater of war, Russia claimed victory over Nazi Germany by capturing Berlin. But again, it does not end with death by warfare. Thousands of soldiers were killed by Russia's winter, being they were poorly equipped to deal with such weather. Millions were killed by the war. And millions more were killed because they were Jewish. Did you know that Russia is the largest country, by land area, in the world? ~Apple Juice
