Indeed Lee started to apply his engineering skill for that purpose already in 1862, during the battle of the Seven Days, when he ordered his army to dig entrenchments but not to make themselves buried into.
He make them do systematic use of the trenches and field fortifications as a basic element of the maneuvered warfare. This strategy of using the field fortification as a cornerstone of the manoeuvre was a "reenactment" of the of the ancient Romans's strategy, of which Lee was a scholar.
