In the late 60's there were some volunteer elderly ladies that used to sew (repair) patches on our class "A" uniforms for free at airports and bus depots or government leased processing centers (leased hotels). When the men were placed on the leased (charter buses) for shipment to Army Forts for Basic Training (Boot Camp) these same category of ladies would often hand out brown paper bagged homemade Sandwiches for the draftees/volunteers loading onto the buses from the big cities. Usually there would be an apple or orange with the sandwiches. It was the opinion at the time, that these gentle women were widows of WW2 veterans. The women never looked us in the eyes when they performed their work.

The North Vietnamese regard it as a war of liberation. The Americans saw it as a war against Communism. For them is was mostly a defensive and ´containment´ war, trying to keep the North Vietnamese from conquering South Vietnam.

Around 600,000 Vietnamese died in the Vietnam War. More Vietnamese died than Americans. That amazes me.

the Vietnam war was not an American war. we got in it to fight off communism. and the vietcong and north vietnamese worked together to fight us, and south vietnamese were hardly using their army to fight, they were letting us do all of it. and Americans didnt want to go die for a lost cause.

I was not involved in the Vietnam war. That was between the American (and Australians and south Vietnamese) and the Vietcong.
