In the late 60's there were some volunteer elderly ladies that used to sew (repair) patches on our class "A" uniforms for free at airports and bus depots or government leased processing centers (leased hotels). When the men were placed on the leased (charter buses) for shipment to Army Forts for Basic Training (Boot Camp) these same category of ladies would often hand out brown paper bagged homemade Sandwiches for the draftees/volunteers loading onto the buses from the big cities. Usually there would be an apple or orange with the sandwiches. It was the opinion at the time, that these gentle women were widows of WW2 veterans. The women never looked us in the eyes when they performed their work.
