At first, sentiment in America was strongly against involvement in the European conflagration. Americans wanted to remain free of the struggle between Europes great powers. Neutrality was the nations keynote.
But there were events that America could not control. A German submarine sank the liner Lusitania in 1915, killing 128 Americans in the process. But America refused to declare war on Germany. In 1916 President Wilson was reelected President of the United States on the slogan, He kept us out of war.
The following year the Germans announced that all shipping, whether belligerent or neutral, would be fair game to their submarines. This meant that American ships were no longer safe on the high seas. Seemingly, it left Wilson with no alternative. He reluctantly declared war on Germany, stating: It is a fearful thing to lead this great peaceful people into war, into the most terrible and disastrous of all wars, civilization itself seeming to be in the balance.
Wilson was so convinced of having Gods backing in his project that he insisted on attending the Paris Peace Conference in 1919this in spite of the fact that many political friends thought that the President of the United States should remain independent of the peace negotiations. He believed that he had the people of the world behind him even if he did not have all the politicians. He was convinced that he was Gods instrument for peace. He, more than anyone else, had to go to Paris.
Neutrality was over, America was now embroiled in the worst war that man had known until then.
Most would say that we were on an immediate path to war the day following Pearl harbor, Dec 7, 1941
AnswerThe United States was involved in WWII almost immediately providing funds and exquipment to the Allied forces. But we did not actively join in the fighting til after Dec 7, 1941. The attack on Pearl was the one thing no one had taken into account. We no longer were separate from the war. At that point we then joined in the fighting. when Americans got involved in WW2In World War 2, Americans got involved right after the Japanese attacked pearl harbor. AnswerPearl Harbor.cant say fully of the top of my head but the US joined the war after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, but only declared war on the Japanese. later they declared on the other Axis forces.
Germany had been sinking US merchant ships and other ships. When they sunk the British ship The Lusitania killing 1200 people traveling to New York (including Americans) Alfred Vanderbilt was on that ship when it went down. He bravely gave up his life preserver for a woman with a baby. He and his valet did not survive. The Americans were incensed. President Wilson and the Congress chose to declare war on Germany. The Germans regarded their action as being justified saying the ship had war ammunition on board and also claimed there were guns on the decks. They did not care if there were families aboard and not military people.
