The Colfax County War, a violent conflict in New Mexico during the 1870s between rival factions over control of local government and resources, effectively ended after the Colfax Massacre on April 15, 1873. A group of white Democrats attacked a Republican-controlled courthouse, resulting in the deaths of around 150 African American residents and their allies. Following this event, federal troops were dispatched to restore order, leading to the eventual decline of the conflict. Ultimately, the war solidified Democratic control in the region and highlighted the era's racial and political tensions.
