The US Civil War with about 213 thousand military dead ranks only slightly behind WWII at 291 thousand in deaths. The Confederates and the Yankees were both Americans and medical care available had advanced greatly between these conflicts. WWI, Korea and Vietnam combined don't reach that level of carnage.

Because the US Civil War was an internal war, the number of American casualties is extremely high. Nevertheless it's worth making a comparison with that war to other major US wars that came afterwards. Using 667,000 as the approximate number of casualties for the US Civil War, other US wars had the following casualty rates:* WW 1 117,000

* WW 2 405,000

* Korean War 54,000

* Vietnam War 58,000

It is noted that these figures are not exact and various historical sources may have different numbers, however, with that said, it's clear how much of an impact the US Civil War had on the US. Even more so when one takes into consideration the fact that the US population increased tremendously from 1865 to 1972.
