About 30 Stratoforts were downed in Vietnam, although one source stated 31. Over half of them were shot down by SAMs over the north as part of President Nixon's, "maximum effort bombing" during the Christmas week of 1972. Officially coded operation Linebacker II.
The Stratofort's only loss to an interceptor was claimed by NVAF Maj. Pham Tuan while flying his MiG-21 jet. Using an air to air missile, Maj. Tuan, along with ten other MiG-21 drivers, had been specially trained for night attacks against the B-52's. Altough one other NVAF MiG-21 pilot claimed a B-52 kill, he and his jet were destroyed in the resulting explosion of the Stratofortress. As the only Survivor, Maj. Tuan's is alive to back up his aerial confirmation. Tuan's aerial victory occurred on 26 December 1972, during the Linebacker II campaign, but again, the USAF has denied the loss to a MiG-21 and credits the lost Stratofort to another SAM.
